   John is the founder of The British Academy of Krav Maga with affiliation to Krav Maga Worldwide and is a fully insured instructor with The British Combat Association.
   
   Presently graded at Black Belt 2nd Dan, John is now the highest graded Krav Maga Worldwide Instructor in the UK and was the first UK Instructor to establish a dedicated Krav Maga centre in the UK (London, Oxford Circus).Where he is supported by a team of club level instructors.
   
   When not teaching Krav Maga John is normally found training private individuals & trainee instructors and running self defence courses apart from the summer months when he spends his weekends teaching kite-surfing at his school in Weymouth, Dorset (www.kitesurfing-adventures.co.uk )

   "We take the wellbeing of our staff very seriously at IGF and increasing knife crime and other threats to personal safety, combined with the fact that a number of our staff are out late at night in potentially vulnerable situations, led us to work with the British Academy of Krav Maga and its Managing Director John Aldcroft, who has an extensive understanding of self defence, to design a special 4 hour seminar for our staff on "how to keep safe".
   
   " The course has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of those staff in attendance and we will be covering such aspects as awareness of body language and how situations can escalate, avoiding or dealing with conflict and ways to distance the threat, escapes from holds/attacks from behind and so on."

   I cry off, pleading back problems, at which point instructor John Aldcroft tells me that he always starts the class with a 45-minute warm-up.Physical fitness, he insists, is as much a key to being able to defend oneself as knowing the techniques.This is the warm-up?Good God.

   Aldcroft has been teaching krav maga for seven years and set up the Krav Maga Centre eight months ago. ‘I'd learnt Thai boxing at university, and while it's great for fitness and as a competitive martial art, I didn't feel it was relevant to self-defence,' he says.He found that krav maga was gaining a reputation in the US, mainly among certain police units, the FBI and Swat teams.

   However, after a few minutes, Aldcroft insists we fight some of the men as ‘in real life, 99.99 per cent of the time, you'll be attacked by a man who is much stronger than you.' This is really, really disturbing and quickly I want it to stop - which I guess is the point.
