John Aldag, manager of Historic Sites, Coastal B.C. of Parks Canada emphasized the importance of the commemoration by explaining that this site is now in the same league as The Empress Hotel in Victoria, the S.S. Klondike in Whitehorse, Yukon and the Parliament buildings in Ottawa, to mention a few. -

"We have to get quite innovative in finding solutions that make the best use of limited budgets," said John Aldag, historic sites manager for the coastal B.C. region of Parks Canada.
One wing of the Lower Battery is shut down, because the concrete slab roof is shifting and there's no money in this year's budget to fix it. The roof at the lighthouse needs replacing, so Aldag has asked for $13,000 in the 2007 budget.
Wind and snow caused extra problems this winter, and he had to get emergency funds to deal with a leaking roof at a Lower Battery administration building. Parks employees kept a close eye on the roof of a Second World War barrack, and were relieved when it didn't leak.
A study showed that to replace the buildings at both Fort Rodd Hill sites would cost $66 million, Aldag said. -
