Barb Aldaba, youth coordinator at IMSS, says the symposium dealt with some serious issues, among them - hate crimes, bullying crimes, drug and health issues, and crimes and the justice system. The four themes were split into nine workshops, each student had to choose three workshops to attend. "There was three going on for each hour," Aldaba said. "Because it was only a one-day thing, we had to offer as much as we could, and made them chose between what was available." Workshops included a talk from RCMP officers about bullying; homophobia awareness by Youth Quest; Nathan Ghostkeepr from Future Cents told his personal story about turning his life around; Aldaba held a workshop on diversity and racism; Lisa Evanoff of the Red Cross did one on dating and relationship violence; Sherry Sherba from the Northern Family Health Society held a talk on the effects of club drugs and alcohol.

"A wide variety of issues were discussed," Aldaba said. "Depending on which ones the youth attended." The idea for the youth symposium arose following an IMSS Northern Action Against Racism Conference. The conference was catered towards professionals and the greatest concern of those in attendance was youth crime and violence. The planning committee began meeting at the end of October. And offered the symposium to students through the school district. "The teachers and counselors chose which students they thought would benefit most from it," Aldaba said. -
