Walter L. Alcorn, SAIC's manager of GreenOnline.com (the Center for Environmental Commerce site that hosts The Brownfields Market), announced the debut of The Brownfields Market for Brownfields '99, a national conference and exhibition being held in Dallas, Texas, December 6-8. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the National Brownfields Association, and a number of other government, environment, and business organizations.

Brownfields are sites or properties that are abandoned or underused because of real or perceived environmental concerns. The EPA estimates that the nearly half-million such sites in the United States have a potential market value of $650 billion.

"The development of brownfields is a dynamic and growing sector of the U.S. real estate market. Redevelopment of brownfields property is also a net plus for the environment because it relieves development pressures in greenfield areas. By using the transaction tools available through The Brownfields Market at GreenOnline.com, both developers and sellers can expand their reach beyond local players and dramatically reduce both the time and cost required to close a deal," Alcorn explained. "We see great potential to facilitate growth and create value in a more efficient marketplace."

The audience for The Brownfields Market at GreenOnline.com comprises the entire brownfields community, including not only owners/sellers and developers/purchasers of disadvantaged properties, but also brokers, providers of insurance, financial, and legal services, engineering and site remediation firms, and policymakers and community development nonprofits.

Alcorn said it is SAIC's goal to build the largest community of electronic resources for environmental commerce worldwide through GreenOnline.com.

"GreenOnline.com is the world's first dynamic, collaborative network for electronic environmental commerce that allows both open exchange of information and the negotiation and consummation of complex contracts in a secure environment. It's a perfect match for brownfields transactions," he said.
