SIANA H. ALCORN Air Quality Analyst
...
Ms. Alcorn joined STI in 1997 and her primary duties include data analysis, validation, management, and acquisition. These activities involve accumulating and organizing data, assessing data quality, understanding instrumentation limitations and measurement differences, and performing analyses. Ms. Alcorn performs a wide range of data validation, management, and analysis activities for epidemiological studies, routine and specialized air quality monitoring programs, ozone and particulate matter (PM) scoping studies, and ozone and toxics analyses projects for the Mid-Atlantic states.
Ms. Alcorn is experienced in looking at data from a variety of visibility and aerosol measurement types. She has studied the affects of instrument operation and local meteorological conditions on data quality. In addition, she has performed regression analysis of PM and visibility measurements as part of data quality control. She also developed regression relationships used to estimate daily PM10 and PM2.5 mass from various continuous mass and visibility measurements for epidemiological studies. In support of field studies, Ms. Alcorn has performed acceptance testing for, installed, calibrated, and operated various air quality instruments. She is experienced in reviewing real-time and historical field data of various measurement types and platforms (surface and aircraft).
Ms. Alcorn has been involved in the acquisition and downloading of Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) data from the National Climatic Data Center. She participated in the preliminary debugging and final development of the software package used to process and analyze ASOS visibility data. She has utilized specialized STI software to perform quality control of volatile organic compound (VOC) data collected from automated gas chromatography systems and Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS) hydrocarbon data for the northeastern U.S., the Mid-Atlantic region, and California.
Before joining STI, Ms. Alcorn participated in the National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Her research project involved the study of nucleation and growth of nanometer-sized CdS particles in glass systems.
While at Sonoma State University, Ms. Alcorn worked as the Physics Department's laboratory and instrument technician's assistant. Her responsibilities included designing and assembling classroom demonstrations, maintaining and diagnosing faulty department equipment, preparing laboratory exercises, and conducting lectures and exercises in undergraduate physics laboratory courses. She was also a member of the Society of Physics Students and Sonoma Earth Action.
