"Basically, reading may not be an athletic activity, but it's still a recreational activity," said Ron Alcorn, director of the Thibodaux Recreation Department."I'm very [much] for reading. The more you read, the more you know."
The Recreation Department teamed with the Thibodaux Rotary Club and the Martha Sowell Utley Memorial Library to sponsor a city version of "Prime Time Reading" that is independent of the parish.Numerous national chain restaurants provided food for the program, and Cherry Books also provided participants with gift bags.
Prime Time Reading also exists parishwide on a rotating basis, Alcorn said, meaning each library has to wait its turn to host the program. Now Thibodaux can provide residents the program at least once per year, Alcorn noted, whereas before it might have to wait three to four years.
Prior to starting the program, Alcorn approached guidance counselors from Thibodaux Elementary, W.S. Lafargue and South Thibodaux, who each chose 20 students who needed help reading.

Alcorn said he is pleased with program's attendance, which ranges between 52 to 57 people.
"This program is not just targeted at children, but their families, their moms, their dads," Alcorn said.
