Distinguished Service - Susan Alcorn MacKay
The Distinguished Service Award honours individuals who have provided leadership to their institution and/or the college system and fostered change that has resulted in substantial improvement locally or provincially.
Recipient Susan Alcorn Mackay has been a member of the Cambrian community since 1986, moving from the position of Coordinator of Special Needs to the Director of The Glenn Crombie Centre when it opened in 1996.
A champion of inclusion and access, Susan has been instrumental in ensuring that Cambrian College and organizations in the greater community are aware of and meet the standards for accessibility for people with a wide range of disabilities.
It was she who brought the need for a special needs centre to the attention of then President Glenn Crombie. And, it was through their joint commitment to those with disabilities that a capital fundraising campaign was launched to build the Special Needs Regional Resource Centre (now The Glenn Crombie Centre).Susan's leadership is also evidenced in how she has motivated Cambrian College staff to create an environment in their classroom that is sensitive and accommodating for students with disabilities.
Her involvement in ensuring a respectful and supportive environment includes and goes beyond Cambrian College. She currently provides leadership to the college system in the development of accessibility audit procedures, is the past chair of the provincial College Committee on Disability Issues (CCDI), is the current chair of CCDI's Financial Special Interest Group, and is the Cambrian lead for the Liberated Learning Project, a consortium of postsecondary institutions, including Cambrian, California State University, and the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia, that are researching the application of voice recognition software. As well, she has been instrumental in the creation of a Northern Ontario Regional Assessment and Research Centre that will be housed at Cambrian and that will provide a focus for assessment and applied research in learning disabilities and that will bring together the expertise of northern psychologists, psychiatrists, psychometrists, and educators.
