Troopers issued tickets to violators on certain infractions, and fines ranged from $100 to $500 plus court costs, said Capt. Gary Albus, who's stationed in Lubbock. Some truckers were issued warnings for more minor problems.
"We check out all the equipment that's required to work," Albus said, as troopers inspected a truck's brakes nearby."Of course, we look at the driver's license and make sure the truck's properly registered and has all the required paperwork. We check all the brakes out. That's what the guys are doing here."

Albus said DPS troopers use uniform guidelines to inspect trucks.
"We have what's called a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, CVSA, and it's an out-of-service criteria that's recognized nationwide, in Mexico and Canada," Albus said.

Albus said some truckers knew about these inspections and avoided being caught by traveling different routes. But he said troopers pull over all those they can.
"(Truckers) seem to be fairly supportive," he said."We didn't have any trouble with any of them.We try to get them in and out as quickly as possible. It's all about safety."
Albus said several truckers said on Wednesday that they had been trying to get their companies to fix defects on their trucks, but to no avail.
