   On the way to the opening ceremonies of the 39th Consolidated Convention, I passed Vice President of Western Canada, Richard Albright in the hallway. I said good morning and Rick said in his loud and boisterous way, "it's a great day to be a boilermaker". I couldn't have agreed more. As I entered the hall and looked around I saw approximately 900 boilermakers, most of whom were elected delegates preparing to demonstrate union democracy in action.
   
   As I stood with the other delegates while the American and Canadian National Anthems were sung and a Marine Corps Color guard presented the flags, I wished that each of you could have been there to witness the momentous occasion of the opening of the 30th Consolidated Convention. The professionalism and dedication of your International officers was obvious and made me proud to be a member of this great organization.
