For Jerry Albright, it doesn´t get any better than that.

Albright, the former longtime owner of J&W Boot and Shoe Repair, recently got his fill of both while working on the George Strait Country Music Festival.

Thanks to an old friend, Albright spent three months last year rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in country music while also seeing the country aboard a big tour bus . . . not to mention eating all the beef jerky his heart desired.

"It was like a once in a lifetime deal," he said.
    ...
"I had good business but it was just time," said Albright.
    ...
"I´ve known Mike for 20 years or so," Albright said.
    ...
You name it, they handle it," said Albright, listing Oscar Mayer, Pepsi and Wrigley as some of the company´s clients.

Another of GMR´s customers is Pemmican Beef Jerky, which happened to be a major sponsor for the George Strait Country Music Festival.

That´s where Albright entered the picture.

Lafaver asked if Albright would be interested in helping him promote Pemmican during the tour.
    ...
So last April, Albright officially joined Strait´s popular tour, which also included country singers Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Lone Star, Lee Ann Womack, Sara Evans, Asleep at the Wheel and the Warren Brothers.
    ...
But because Pemmican had the rights to the autograph sessions, Albright also helped escort entertainers to and from signing sessions.

"Every concert we would hire security and we would go back and bring out the entertainers for autographs," he said.
    ...
"Girls were crying and carrying on over him," Albright laughed.

He said Paisley´s new video "shows him signing autographs at our booth."

Albright wasn´t sure if he was in the video or not. "If I´m in there it´s my hands setting this kid up on the autograph table."

While they heard lots of good music, Albright said he never actually got to see any of the entertainers perform.

"I never saw a concert because I was out doing my thing. We were busy in Straitland while the concerts were going on," he said.
    ...
Although sightseeing was limited because of all the travel, Albright - who got to fly home four times during "off" weeks - did get to see and do things he may never get to again.

One of Albright´s favorite stories is visiting Chicago´s Wrigley Field, where Strait´s fiddle player took Albright to a Cubs game.

"He took us back in the locker room and we met all the players," he said.

Albright met up with his brother in Kansas City and was able to treat his family to a concert there. And his daughter, 33-year-old Wendy who was raised in Kress and now lives in Conroe, joined him for the tour´s last two stops in San Antonio at the Alamodome and in Dallas at Texas Stadium.

They also attended an "after-tour party" held at Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas.

"Wendy and I were sitting there and George and Alan Jackson came and sat down with their wives not far from us," Albright said.
    ...
Albright said all of the entertainers on the tour are great people.

"They´re the best people. They treat everybody real well."

While the work was fun and the pay was good, Albright doesn´t see himself doing that kind of work full time. He balked at a possible opportunity to help his friend on a 90-concert, nine-month tour with Kenny Chesney.

"That´s his thing, not mine," said Albright.
    ...
But, given the right circumstances again, Albright would definitely go back on the road.

Albright,s job included making sure Pemmican,s booth at Straitland - the carnival-like event outside the concert that featured rides and sponsors, booths - was properly set up and run. Some 4,000 1-oz. sample bags of Pemmican,s beef jerky were handed out at each concert stop. Workers at the booth also put on activities like stick-on tattoos, he said.
