Ashley Albridge is one of the seniors who suffered through the rough times last season. Albridge is a 3-year letterwinner in right field and ended up with a .300 batting average. She finished 2005 with a .380 on-base percentage.
Albridge stated that playing this season has been a completely different experience from past seasons and not because it is her last.
"We are playing with a lot more spirit this year and it is a lot more enjoyable being on the winning side this year," Albridge said. "It is exciting to see all of the girls working together and having fun."
In 54 at-bats, she struck out only four times.
...
Albridge, affectionately known as "Gertie" to her teammates, is also a member of the National Honor Society, has received a perfect attendance award and is a member of the school's student council.
Apparently, there are many Ashleys that attend Jefferson High School. According to Albridge, that's how the nickname came about.
"When I was an underclassman, there were Ashleys everywhere; there were three in band, show choir and everywhere, so I just got fed up with it every time someone said Ashley. One time I just freaked out and said just called me Gertrude and it stuck," a smiling Albridge said.
The name Gertrude, with its distinguished sound, may be what she needs in her career goal as she plans to attend Bowling Green State University to study Spanish.
"I hope to work at the United Nations one day," Albridge commented.
Although the honor roll student has had her best year in the field and at the plate, she is most proud of one of her accomplishments off the field - getting the lead role as "Millie" in the school play "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."
"My most memorable part of high school is getting the lead in the class play. I really enjoyed that. It was so much fun, I'll never forget that; it was awesome," she added.
The Lady Jeffcats were blessed with another senior on the roster; whereas Albridge was a leader in the field, Lindsey Drerup was a leader on the bench. -
