Steve Albrecht, owner of Walnut Hills Campground in Staunton, decided to keep his campground open year-round two years ago.
"We are one of the few campgrounds on the I-81 corridor who are open during the winter months," he said. "We, like most other campgrounds, used to be closed November to March."
Now Albrecht keeps his campground open as a courtesy to his customers. "It is going to be a long time before it becomes finan-cially beneficial to stay open all winter," he said.

The beginning and end of winter bring the "snow birds" out of the woodwork, Albrecht said. He also plans his vacations for the winter, to leave summers available to run the campground.
"Traveling in winter in general is less crowded," he said.
