Apparel design professor, Dr. Donna Albrecht, describes her various scholastic degrees and current home life
    ...
Albrecht, a UW-Stout professor and alumna, has earned numerous degrees, including what she affectionately calls her MRS degree.

Most students don't see their professors outside of class, and many know nothing about the lives of the people who stand at the front of the classroom.

Dr. Donna Albrecht, apparel design professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, grew up a middle child in small town Minnesota, attended a country school, worked to hold on to her "pie champion" title in 4-H and tended to the small family farm.

If she would have heeded the advice of her mother 37 years ago, she wouldn't be who or where she is today.

"There were no relatives here," said Albrecht, auto-matically, when asked why she chose to attend UW-Stout almost 40 years ago.

Her mother wanted her to attend Minnesota State so she could live with her older sister, husband and kids.

"Who wants to go to college and baby-sit?" said Albrecht. "Not me."

Instead she decided to attend UW-Stout as an undergraduate, to apply her 4-H skills. She graduated in 1968 with a B.S. in home economics.

    And she was off.

With the love of clothing and textiles still bubbling inside of her, in 1969 she quickly got her master's at UW-Stout for textiles and clothing.

To demonstrate the order in which she received her degrees, she stretches her hand out on the table. Chuckling, she points to her first finger which is reserved for what she affectionately calls her MRS degree.

"Before I graduated, I got married," said Albrecht.

Between her junior and senior years at UW-Stout she married her husband, some 38 years ago.

She started teaching at UW-Stout, in what was then the Home Economics department, in 1969. She worked hard at developing a lot of the courses that are still in existence today. Along with writing courses, she has also written a number of professional publications.

Albrecht then went on to pursue her Ph.D. It was then, in 1980, that she did what her mother wanted her to do several years earlier; she attended the University of Minnesota.

Professional achievements aside, Albrecht is not only a professor but a mentor to students in the apparel program.

"I love connecting with students," said Albrecht when asked about her favorite part of being a professor.

She also believes in the importance of keeping good, professional relationships with students both before and after they graduate.

"Donna is not only a good professor, but she has an excellent personality, which makes class with her enjoyable," said Bethany Schafer, a senior in apparel design and development who has worked as Albrecht's teaching assistant.
    ...
Along with her achievements as a professor, Albrecht enjoys her other pastimes as well. She resides in North Menomonie, surrounded by rolling hills, animals and a serene environment. This is where she gardens, constructs costumes for her grandchildren and still fondly remembers when she held the "pie champion" title.
