   The premier volunteer award, the Mike McKinney Community Volunteer Award, was awarded to Pedro Albiter for his volunteer commitment to Dane County in numerous organizations.
   
   The winners were chosen from over 80 nominations, attesting to the incredible contributions of volunteers in Dane County.Award recipients each received a ,1,000 contribution to the non-profit at which they volunteer, with the exception of the youth award winner who received a ,500 scholarship for post-secondary education and a ,500 contribution to her non-profit.

   Pedro Albiter's story of volunteerism is about hard work and giving back.He came to the United States 21 years ago, speaking only limited English.Since that time he has received a degree in Education from UW-Madison and become a local community leader.Pedro's excellence in college was rewarded with the Centro Hispano Award for Achievement and three straight years on the Deans' List, and his degree in Education guided his first volunteer activities.Mr. Albiter was a volunteer tutor for Sherman Middle School, working with minority and Latino students in the after-school "Juventud" program.He mentored the young students and provided them with help in their academic studies.He spends considerable time contributing his bilingual talents to community members and organizations, and for over nine years he has served the Latino Support Network and Latinos Unite for Change and Advancement groups.As the founder of the Comité Festival Mexicano-Wisconsin (COFEMEX), Pedro organized two Mexican Independence Festivals, attracting more than 10,000 people and uniting the community in celebration.His leadership in COFEMEX has led to the creation of several ,1000 scholarships, sponsored by local businesses, which will help high school students succeed in college and become future leaders of our community.His work in our community has been instrumental in connecting many small Latino businesses with the Latino Chamber of Commerce.As his nominator says "He is a motivated leader not only helping the Latino Community but helping anyone who is in need.Dane County is a better place to live because of Pedro Albiter."
