Coach Ryan Albertson rarely has a problem motivating his runners.
"They're so eager to do something," said Albertson, once a Wings runner himself. "The biggest challenge is trying to find a balance between consistency and variety."
The Wings program
officially begins in April with about 35 youthful enthusiasts, when Albertson puts the emphasis on strength training.
Things really heat up when school lets out in May. Albertson starts sharpening his pupils' minds in preparation for June's district and state meets, where they can qualify for nationals.
...
"At this age, I'm not going to set a time or place for them to finish in," Albertson said. "All I ask is for them to go out and compete hard and not give up."
He knows that won't be a
problem. Not with a group of kids who Albertson said is as close as any Wings team before it.
Want proof? For the duration of nationals, the Wings will bunk together in an eight-bedroom
cabin in nearby Pigeon Forge.
"After three months of seeing each other three days a week," Albertson said, "they still want to spend the trip together."
