In the Millcreek Township School District , teachers need to get in 42 flex hours of in-service each year as part of their contract , said teacher Mary Lou Albertson.
They can earn six of those hours at a daylong in-service program on Aug. 23. Teachers also can spend up to six hours getting their classroom ready for the start of school.
Albertson , who teaches first grade at Chestnut Hill Elementary School , said she usually begins going in to her classroom for a little bit each day about the second or third week in August. She decides how she's going to arrange the desks , what she's going to put up in the room and where everything is going to go.
When you add up the hours you put in , it's well over six hours , '' she said.
She already put in at least that much time each day for five days helping to rewrite the kindergarten and first-grade science curriculum to meet the state academic standards.
Albertson and teachers from other Millcreek elementary schools worked with an Edinboro University of Pennsylvania professor each day from 8 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.m..
The teachers could count the time toward their in-service requirement or toward their Act 48 credit requirement or they could opt to be paid $19 an hour , she said.
Different teachers took different things depending on what they needed , '' Albertson said.
Because she has two children in college , she said , she opted for the money.
