FAIRHOPE - People suffering from arthritic-hip and knee pain now have a minimally invasive alternative to traditional hip and knee replacement that makes surgery, recovery and rehabilitation faster and easier.
Carl Albertson, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon with Bayside Orthopaedic, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, was one of the first physicians in southern Alabama to perform this new advanced surgical procedure.Dr. Albertson traveled to Atlanta, Los Angeles and the Bahamas for special training from Zimmer, Inc., a company that provides hands-on education and training for orthopaedic surgeons, before performing the surgery at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.
This new procedure uses specialized instruments and adapted surgical techniques to implant the same hip and knee implants used in standard hip replacement. The new technique allows the implant to be inserted through an incision 3.5 to 5 inches in length, rather than the standard 10 to 12 inch incision. This approach causes less pain and recovery time because there is less trauma to the muscles.
Significant potential benefits, including a smaller scar, shorter hospital stay and faster rehabilitation, allow the patient to return to work and other daily activities quicker.Dr. Albertson said patients could expect a 24- to 48-hour hospital stay, and a possible return to an office setting within three to five days.
"Hip and knee replacements have long been one of the most successful procedures for improving quality of life and alleviating pain," Dr. Albertson said, "but they have also been accompanied by a lengthy and painful recovery.

Dr. Albertson will discuss this new surgery during a community lecture titled, "Exciting New Developments to Relieve Hip and Knee Pain" at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 9 at the James P. Nix Senior Center in Fairhope.
