Called "Peak Day," Dec. 19 saw in excess of 18 million packages delivered to their destinations, said Janelle Alberts, a UPS spokeswoman in Atlanta, Ga.
That works out to one package for every American child under the age of 5, or about 210 packages delivered every second.
UPS mobilized 88,000 trucks and 60,000 seasonal workers to help the delivery company's 360,000 regular employees cope with the crush, Alberts said. UPS also added a dozen jets to supplement its regular fleet of 600 aircraft.
On a normal day, UPS delivers 13.6 million packages daily.
Despite Peak Day's passing, Alberts said a heavier-than-usual load of packages will continue moving through UPS' residential and commercial network until Christmas. On Dec. 24, another milestone will be reached, Alberts said, when 4.5 million air express packages, more than double the normal average, will be delivered.
Alberts said UPS will try to deliver just about anything for Christmas.
"We see unique things all the time. Remember that movie, 'Free Willy'? We're the ones that moved the whale," she said.
