    ...
"The American College of Chest Physicians has almost 17,000 members and it is international in scope," Alberts said in a recent interview with The Herald-Whig. "Members are primarily pulmonologists, intensivists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists and any health-care practitioners interested in diseases of the chest."

The ACCP's mission is to promote the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest through leadership, education, research and communication.

"Our prime reason to be is education for the practitioner," Alberts said. "We're also interested in supporting the members' practices, patient education and assisting in patient care."

Alberts says the organization is strongly involved in advocacy, including anti-smoking campaigns.

"Many of the diseases of the heart and lungs are caused by smoking," he said. "The rate of smoking is going down, but not as far as we'd like to have it."

Alberts was inducted as ACCP president during CHEST 2005, the college's 71st annual international scientific assembly in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His term is for one year, but he will be involved in executive leadership for at least three years.

"It is a lot of work," he said of his new role. "But it's a lot of work that you can see the benefits of right away. You feel like all your hard work is coming to fruition."

Alberts serves as chief medical officer at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and professor of oncology and medicine in the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa.

His research and scholarly interests include the diagnosis and management of lung cancer, occupational airways disorders and the business of medicine. Alberts has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including being selected by his peers to be listed in the Best Doctors in America.

Alberts and his wife, Debra, have two children , Katie, a freshman at Duke University, and Michael, a high school sophomore.
