LCC to offer online learning opportunities with eCampus

A collaboration of 15 Alberta colleges and technical institutions now provides learners with online access to a province-wide array of courses. Through eCampus Alberta, Lethbridge Community College and its 14 partners are able to offer learners what they would otherwise be unable to access due to distance, says Karen O'Dwyer, the College's representative on the consortium.

"The concept of eCampus Alberta is to increase student access to learning by offering quality courses they would not normally be able to take.

Online learning is not a new concept in Alberta. LCC already offers some courses online as do other institutions involved in the project. But eCampus Alberta will allow for transferability, opening up far more courses to learners throughout the province.

It also provides students with learning assistance at any of the 15 colleges; instruction will remain with the college that developed the course.

The seamless nature of the project allows a learner in Olds to register for an LCC course and receive assistance from an instructor at Olds College. Besides LCC and Olds, partners include Bow Valley College, Fairview College, Grande Prairie Regional College, Grant MacEwan College, Keyano College, Lakeland College, Medicine Hat College, Mount Royal College, NorQuest College, Northern Lakes College, Portage College, Red Deer College and SAIT.

That means a record high 100 exhibitors, exclusive of the LCC programs also represented, will be on display for prospective students from as far afield as southwestern Saskatchewan, southeastern British Columbia and from across Alberta.
    ...
Lethbridge Community College has become the first college in Alberta to name an ombudsman for its learners.

Doug Patching, a 24-year LCC veteran counselor, is only one of two ombudsmen in post-secondary institutions in Alberta - the other is Athabasca University - and just the 41st member of the Association of Canadian College and University Ombudspersons in Canada.

"LCC enjoys the best relationship between its executive and the Student Association of any post-secondary institution in Alberta," says Patching.
