His family was instrumental in the establishment of newspapers in Langdon, Bassano and Brooks and he carried on the family interest as editor of the Mail from 1934 to 1936 and editor and publisher of The Bulletin from 1953 until 1981 when he semi-retired to Calgary.He maintained an active interest in the newspaper, writing a column, historical articles and editorials right up until his death.As a youngster he graduated from Central High School in Calgary in 1933 and after his stint with the Bassano Mail he attended the University of Alberta where he excelled at football.He went on to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology which he attended in 1939.He farmed at Cheadle for two years before joining the Canadian Army, serving overseas as Lieutenant with the 4th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery.He returned to the farm upon his arrival home in 1946 with many memories of the war that he would pass on to his family over the years. On January 6, 1951 he married Norma (Cy) Long who had come to Calgary from Thunder Bay, Ontario and they resided on the farm until moving to Brooks in 1953.He enjoyed golf and skiing and most spectator sports and was interested in world affairs and politics.He loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and also enjoyed his almost daily gatherings with his friends in Calgary and Brooks at morning coffee.
