Since then, people in this rural town have been extremely helpful to the family, according to Nancy Albert, director of the Social Services Department.
Albert said the family's only source of income is Social Security. The insurance for the fire covered only structural damage, she said.
...
Neighbors are always working to help other neighbors," Albert said, adding that people of all ages have donated clothes, some furniture and money and the food bank has contributed to the fund.
Still, while donations of food and clothing are going fine, the Melnick family needs money to pay for temporary housing and to rebuild their house.
This is the second time in as many months that the town has responded to help its neighbors. Albert said another family lost everything in a Christmas fire and the town came forward for them.
"The town is used to opening up and just giving," she said.
Albert said Lebanon operates differently from a city like Norwich because there aren't agencies townspeople can turn to in time of need. People may call Town Hall for more information on how to help but they usually do it on their own accord, she said.
"I'm not pounding pavement. People who come to me want to help," Albert said.
Donations of $5, $10, $20 or more would be helpful, she said, and may be sent to: The William Melnick Fire Loss Fund, c/o Savings Institute, P.O. Box 86, Lebanon, CT 06249.
