Produced by the Memphis Area Bluegrass Association (MABA) in conjunction with the Bartlett center and local bluegrass concert institution the Lucy Opry, the recorded event featuring a number of Memphis grassers will be released independently as a document of the region's bluegrass scene, according to MABA president Mike Albert.
"Most of us are amateur musicians," says Albert, a technical analyst at FedEx who also plays the banjo. "We're not going to sign a recording contract and go out on tour. Some folks, myself included, will probably never record a CD, so this is an opportunity to record what we're doing and what the Memphis Bluegrass Association sounds like - more of an archival kind of thing."
Albert also hopes the CD will act as a fund-raiser for the organization. Now in its third year, the MABA has nearly 200 members. Among its activities: a weekly picking session from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays at Kingsway Christian Church.
Albert is the first to admit that the O Brother, Where Art Thou? phenomenon has had an impact on membership and interest.
"That's had a big impact on things," he says.

Albert hopes the CD will be out by year's end. And look for another bluegrass revue next May by the same organizational trio. Dubbed the "Pickin' Picnic Bluegrass Festival," the weekend event will feature numerous bands in a free outdoor setting May 2-3 on the Bartlett center grounds followed by a final Sunday concert from the Lonesome River Band. -
