Prior to receiving the grant, St. Teresa's Principal Ellen Albert said she and other teachers had begun putting together an after-school tutoring and mentoring program. They wanted to reach out to the school's English as a Second Language students in addition to those students who wanted the extra academic help.
Now, a handful of students work with their mentors for 45 minutes after school on Mondays through Thursdays.Albert said the school - thanks to the grant money - would expand its program services once students return from Christmas break in January. She also was able to hire a coordinator for the program with part of the grant money.
"Eventually we'll open this up to all St. Teresa students and have a sign-up for different nights," Albert said."Mentors will help with homework. If a child needs extra help in reading, math, whatever the need is, they'll help them with it."
Albert said grant money also will go toward materials for the program, including snacks, desks, study carols or any other supplies.
She hopes that students will remain paired with the same tutor/mentor throughout the remainder of the school year, she said.
