Evelyn Ain, the director of Autism United and the mother of Matthew, a nonverbal autistic 8-year-old, says, "I don't want Matthew to be called a spoiled brat, undisciplined, or a moron, or that I or his father don't give him enough love.
    ...
Ain says, "Sickness, illnesses and mental disorders should not be targets of entertainment and it does not fall under freedom of speech." Maybe he thought he could get away with it because since they couldn't speak or defend themselves, no one would fight back. But, boy, was he wrong!

When he later tried to explain his original comments he mentioned that he had a severely disabled sibling who died in an institution. He may have had a sibling who had a bad disorder, but that should make him more understanding about other disorders and the hardships that the parents go through knowing their child will be different from the other kids. Savage's comment is very much like his last name, which means "angry," "cruel," "primitive" and "bad-tempered."
    ...
Ain and Autism United are also now trying to get legislation passed saying that this kind of hate speech should not be permitted.

By the time I met Spectrum's publisher Evelyn Ain, I already knew that I'd be writing about autism in some capacity for the rest of my life or at least until a cure was found.

    Evelyn Ain Spectrum Magazine

Evelyn Ain's career as an entrepreneur began with the creation of Zoom Wireless USA, now a leading dealer of cellular phones with more than 47 locations across the country.

Since learning of her son's diagnosis with autism, she has become a relentless advocate for autism awareness. Autism affects one in every 166 children with no known cause or cure and finding the right services for her son Matthew posed quite a challenge. Frustrated by the lack of information available, Ain launched Spectrum Magazine in April 2004. Spectrum is the first publication for parents of children with autism and developmental disabilities.

In her role as publisher, she utilizes her parent advocacy and networking experience to provide a special needs information portal bridging the gap between the growing special needs population and the latest news, education and lifestyle issues surrounding autism and developmental disabilities. Just eight months after Spectrum's inception, it is now being distributed nationwide with a circulation of 60,000. Ain not only serves as the sole publisher, but a frequent contributor who takes a hands-on approach with editorial content.

She is co-chair of the North Shore/Long Island Jewish Health System's Autism Committee and is a member of the Developmental Disabilities Institute's Business Advisory Board. Recognized by state and local officials for her work, she was recently appointed by the Commissioner of the Nassau County Health Department to serve on the Early Intervention Coordinating Council.

Ain resides in Oyster Bay with her husband Gary and their son Matthew.
