Addressing a gathering at the Business Meet-cum-Seminar with French Food Industry Delegation under the aegies of Indian Chambers of Commerce, Mr S S Ahuja, Principal Secretary, Department of Food Processing and Horticulture, West Bengal Government, said, "We need infrastructure and human resource development in the areas of food safety and food quality and technical assistance in the packaging of processed food.""We also need technical assistance for upgradation of traditional food technologies. In fact in the areas of technical collaboration we need to chalk out the required areas where strategic relationship with the French companies is viable," he said.

"We would like food processing industries from France to become joint venture partners for providing technical support and financial assistance in establishing a network of food parks as well," Mr Ahuja added.

He pointed out that the estimated loss in fruits and vegetable sector alone due to non-availability of infrastructure was in the tune of USD 10 million a year and hence the enormous opportunity for massive upgradation.

"The state government has given priority status to food processing industry due to the huge potential for income and employment generation," he added.
