    Dr. Richard Ahuja is a Chicago native. He is assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Chicago Medical School and director of residency education and research at the Stroger Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital). He is actively involved in resident and medical student education and program development and has been the recipient of two excellence in teaching awards.

    Dr. Ahuja received his undergraduate education at Northwestern University in philosophy and neurobiology. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University. He then went on to complete two fellowships, in medical retina with Professor Alan Bird at Moorfields Eye Hospital and in vitreoretinal diseases at the University of Maryland.

    Dr. Ahuja is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Diabetes Association and the COS. He is on staff at Stroger Hospital of Cook County and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

    Dr. Ahuja's practice focuses on medical and surgical diseases of the retina, vitreous and macula. His special areas of clinical interest are diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and age-related macular degeneration. He has given many lectures both nationally and internationally on retinal vascular diseases. Dr. Ahuja remains active in research with particular interest in new therapies for complications of diabetic retinopathy such as neovascularization and macular edema.
