    Karl Ahlrichs, a consultant in Indianapolis who has worked on corporate downsizings, said companies will sometimes turn to people such as Brandt when they feel a crisis is imminent.

    Ahlrichs said it's not uncommon for company leaders to turn restructuring tasks over to specialists, who often have long tenures as chief executives or operating officers with experience that is directly related to the industry where they have been assigned.

    Ahlrichs said it's best if a restructuring or turnaround expert can get at his or her task as soon as is possible.Regardless of the timing, however, he said it should be clear to everyone in the organization that change is afoot.
