Stephanie Agruso describes her new role as Indiana University Southeast's primary fund-raiser in one straightforward sentence: "I'm a storyteller."
As Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development, Agruso wants to share the story of IUS and how it positively impacts the lives of students and residents throughout the region. Agruso joined the campus on Jan. 5 and will be responsible for generating long-term development and fundraising campaigns.
The key to success at IUS will be building long-term relationships between the university and the community, Agruso said.
"We need to convey the message to potential donors that IUS is an incredible asset for the entire community," she said. "Students at IUS get the kind of first-rate education and personal attention normally associated with expensive private schools, but at a very affordable cost. That's a profound message. The key is communicating that message effectively so that others will want to be a part of it."
Private and corporate contributions for higher education are more important than ever in light of decreased financial support by the state, Agruso said.
"As tuition costs continue to spiral upwards, students need more financial aid," she said. "I would like to increase the number of scholarships so that any qualified student who wants to attend IUS can. This is a caring community. My job is to garner the rapport and trust of the community so that people will want to give."
Agruso brings 19 years of fundraising experience to IUS. She most recently served as Director of Development for the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts in Storrs, Conn. She was a member of the University of Connecticut's senior management team charged with initiating a comprehensive strategic plan for development in terms of capital campaigns, corporate and foundation relations, gift planning, and annual gifts.
Before joining the University of Connecticut, she operated her own fund-raising company, Stephanie R. Agruso & Associates, in her native Cincinnati. She has also served as Director of Development and External Relations at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Program Director of the Leukemia Society of America, Cincinnati Chapter and President and Founder of Child Help and Support Enforcement (CHASE) in Springfield, Mo.
Agruso graduated with honors from Drury College in Springfield, Mo., with a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Sciences and Psychology. -
