Bill Adams is with the Retail Gas Dealers Association. He says there are two reasons.

Gas stations still have fuel in their tanks that was purchased from distributors at a higher price, and the second reason has to do with profit margins.

"You have dealers that on first nine months of the year have actually taken losses on product because they haven't been able to keep up with the increase, during first nine months of year."

But Adams says gas could fall 10 cents a gallon each day, if the price of oil keeps dropping as well.

We took that question to Bill Adams, the head of the Repair Shop and Gasoline Dealers Association. He says that because of the news out of Alaska, prices will go up two, three, four cents or more in the coming days. That's because the gas in the tanks at the gas station now was bought before market prices went up.Once gas stations have to refill those tanks as they do every few days, dealers will be buying gas at a higher price, meaning the higher prices will be passed along to the consumer."As of this morning the market is up almost 4 cents a gallon. It will be increase to the consumer probably within the next day or two as dealers use up their inventory and more supply comes into locations, the prices will reflect an increase," said Adams

"In the last two days my prices have increased 33 cents, and change," said Bill Adams, who's owned a gas station at the four-corners in Fairport for 20 years.Adams, who is president of the Gasoline Dealers Association in Rochester, says his supplier raised prices 22 cents a gallon from Tuesday to Wednesday alone.

"It's tough to take," said Adams.
    ...
"I think it's more or less used as an excuse," said Adams."I think they have plenty of inventory."

With Gulf Coast refinery production at a standstill, the federal government indicated it will tap into the strategic petroleum reserve.Whether that will stabilize prices remains to be seen.

Adams remains hopeful, though he predicts in the short term regular unleaded gasoline will top three dollars a gallon by this weekend.

What happens after that - is anyone's guess.

"It's gonna get to the point in time where the pain is going to be unbearable," said Adams.
