The speaker of the Alabama Silver-Haired Legislature, 85-year-old Bill Adams of Madison County, says removing the state's 4 percent tax on groceries would help senior citizens on fixed incomes. He said senior citizens often must choose between buying groceries or medicine. With three days remaining in the 2008 regular session, the Democrat backed bill is currently stymied in the Senate.

Senate Republicans want to attach it to a bill to change property tax reappraisals from annually to once every four years. Adams and the executive director of the AARP, Joan Carter, joined the House and Senate sponsors of the bill Tuesday at a news conference.
