The excerpt by Mr. Acton, it should be explained, was part of an "in-house" message delivered by him to his academic constituency. As it appears here, private or specialized references have been left out.The editor was admittedly astonished to discover that by the use of this simple editorial expedient--which has the force of directing the thesis to what Swedenborg called the "church universal" (defined in Heaven and Hell n. 328 as including "all people who live in the good of charity in accord with their own religious persuasion' ')--the resulting statement seems to point strongly to more than one of the canons of interpretation we seek.Again, our readers are invited to comment on what they see as some of the implications of Mr. Acton's talk.
