Dr. R. Michael Abram stated, "The symposium is designed to enhance and compliment this on-loan traveling exhibit."
The exhibit is contemporary Cherokee art from the permanent collection of the Cherokee Heritage Museum & Gallery, Saunooke Village, Cherokee, North Carolina and curated by Dr. R. Michael Abram.The exhibit was inspired by Dr. Carolyn Ross Johnston's book "Cherokee Women in Crisis."

Dr. Abram said, "By utilizing and interpreting the contemporary Cherokee works of art within the pre-historical, historical and cultural context that they represent, a connection is made between the first Cherokee woman of the past and all Cherokee women of the present."
The symposium will feature presentations by special guests Fred Bradley, Eastern Band Cherokee Storyteller; Dr. R. Michael Abram, Curator of the Cherokee Heritage Museum & Gallery, Saunooke Village, Cherokee, North Carolina; and Dr. Carolyn Ross Johnston, author of Cherokee Women in Crisis, who will also serve as the moderator.

Dr. Abram will interpret the cultural aspects contained in the legends and discuss how they apply to the daily lives of Cherokee women.Dr. Abram is a member of the Cherokee Historical Association and is a recipient of The Sequoyah Award in 2000 for promoting American Indian heritage through educational and cultural activities.He has been a consultant to many authors and film producers concerning various Cherokee topics and has appeared in several film documentaries about the Cherokee.He authored the article The Uku Dance and co-authored with his wife, Susan, two articles "The Cherokee Wedding Ceremony" and "Seven the Sacred Number" for East Tennessee Indian League publications.
Dr. Abram and his wife own the world's largest collection of Cherokee art and operate the only museum in the world, Cherokee Heritage Museum & Gallery, totally devoted to the Cherokee arts.He lectures on Cherokee legends, culture, and history and curates on-loan exhibits for museums and art galleries.
