During a press conference conducted at the seat of LADDH by its president, Ali Yahia Abdenour, the president of the League's office in Relizane province, El Hadj Smain declared that certain bodies have been identified by their families thanks to their clothes and some personal things which had kept in their pockets.

"The bodies were for people who have been kidnapped between 1995 and 1998," according to Smain who declared that "the recovered clothes, things, pictures and the mass graves which were filmed last December 13th, were presented to the journalists during the press conference."

Ali Yahia Abdenour, called the public authorities, to tell all the truth about the death of these people to their families. On a question relating to a possible collaboration with the National League and Consultative Commission for the Promotion of Human Rights (CNCPPDH), the same speaker thinks that this commission should get in touch with the concerned institutions namely justice "if ever it wants to resolve the question of the missing."

Finally, he called the candidates to the presidential elections "to clearly express their points of view" concerning the fundamental rights and liberties and the question of the missing.

Ali Yahia Abdenour, president of the LADDH, deplored the sentence and said he had no option but to take the case to before the United Nations.

The regime now finds itself in a dilemma: whether to hear Smain's appeal and so run the risk of a third Relizane court case or whether to refuse his appeal and so imprison him while those widely suspected of mass killings walk free in the streets of Relizane.

Ali Yahia Abdenour of the LADDH spoke of a mascarade.Noureddine Azzouz argues, in the Quot d'Oran, that Bouteflika has chosen the route of the concorde civile - which pardoned the Islamists - and that he wants to follow the same route in pardoning the security forces for 'disappearances', so that maybe the proposal for indemnification is the best that the families can hope to get.

The Collectif des familles de disparus en Algérie (CFDA) has reiterated, in a public communiqué, its determination to establish an independent mechanism, with effective powers, and capable of leading 'true investigations'.The CFDA is astonished by radio comments made on 22 Sept by Farouk Ksentini, President of the CNCPPDH, in which he stated that 'the 'disappeared' have no chance of re-appearing: he had already implicitly recognised the responsibility of the security forces.
