FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (1/29/01) -- Darrell Gwynn, president of Gwynn/Steinbrenner Racing, L.L.C. today announced that Robert G. Abdellah, a senior executive with more than 20 years experience in sports marketing and professional racing team management, has joined the company as its Managing Director.
"Bob Abdellah gives Gwynn/Steinbrenner Racing a depth of knowledge and experience that is key to our venture reaching and maintaining a position of industry leadership," said Gwynn. "His extensive background in both the racing and corporate worlds make him uniquely qualified to lead us in achieving our goals. A valued friend and colleague for 20 years, we're delighted to formally reunite Bob with our program."
Abdellah, 44, most recently served as vice president of Prolong Super Lubricants, a leader in the manufacturer of high-technology consumer automotive and industrial specialty chemicals based in Irvine, California. Under his tenure at Prolong, Abdellah directed the corporation's motorsports programs including NASCAR, NHRA, IHRA and Indy Racing League sponsorships, among others. He additionally held responsibility for corporate communications and investor relations.
Abdellah previously directed public relations and marketing programs for five-time NHRA Winston Champion Kenny Bernstein's sports marketing company, King Sports, Inc. His tenure with Bernstein, which exceeded a decade, included supervision of public relations and marketing programs for a diverse portfolio of clients including several Fortune 500 corporations. In addition, he provided active support to Bernstein's NHRA drag racing, NASCAR Winston Cup and Indy car teams.
In the early 1980s, Abdellah directed public relations and marketing activities for Gwynn Racing during their transition from the NHRA sportsman to professional ranks. Those efforts culminated in the team's acquisition of its first primary sponsorship as a Top Fuel team.
Gwynn/Steinbrenner Racing fields the New York Yankees dragster in NHRA Winston Drag Racing's Top Fuel division. The team is led by a partnership including Darrell Gwynn and his father, Jerry, along with Hank Steinbrenner and his father, George, baseball's famed New York Yankees owner.
