   Another brother, Basim Abdelkarim of Torrance, said: "I'm excited that my brother's coming back.I've always maintained his innocence."
   
   Basim Abdelkarim said his brother was being harassed by the Israelis because he was providing relief to the Palestinians.
   
   "It's not a crime to provide humanitarian assistance, which is what the Israelis want to imply," Basim Abdelkarim added.
   
   Born in California to Palestinian parents, Abdelkarim is a frequent commentator on Middle East issues who has taken positions against both Arab extremism and Israeli army abuses.He was questioned by the FBI after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
   
   Abdelkarim's family members were surprised by the timing of his release.He had lost an appeal Wednesday.
   
   Dalell Mohmed, executive director of Kinder-USA, also was jailed for eight days this month in Israel.Abdelkarim is a Kinder-USA board member.

   Specific allegations against Abdelkarim, 34, were published in today's online edition of the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz.
   
   Abdelkarim's detention, which began May 5, is based on Israel's suspicions that he is a senior activist in the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, the online article stated.Abdelkarim has denied all accusations.

   Israel outlawed the Holy Land Foundation in 1997.Abdelkarim joined its board last year.Holy Land has denied the allegations against it and is fighting to regain its money.
   
   "Whatever Holy Land has allegedly done ... the doctor has been involved in nothing other than humanitarian relief," said Nidal Ibrahim, a family spokesman.
   
   Ha'aretz also reported that Abdelkarim's detention was extended Wednesday by seven days - a matter his family disputes.Initially, the detention was to end Monday, but the courts then extended it by six days, his attorney has said.
