   Coincidentally , Moussa had previously replaced Dr. Abdel Meguid as Egypt's foreign minister in 1991.
   
   Born on October 3 , 1936 , in Cairo , Moussa graduated from Cairo University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Law. After his graduation , he applied for a position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1958 , marking the beginning of his political career. By 1977 , Moussa had become director of the International Organization Department , where he spent four years until he was assigned the role of Egypt's alternate representative at the UN in 1981.
   
   A major milestone in his career was his appointment as Egypt's ambassador to India in 1987. In 1990 , he became Egypt's permanent representative at the UN for only one year , after which he was made foreign affairs minister in 1991. Since then , he has played an important and dynamic role in the international political arena and has been significantly involved in the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. In his role as secretary general of the Arab League , Moussa will be able to make use of the road he paved during his 10 years as foreign affairs minister. Analysts expect he will play a critical role in the Arab-Israeli conflict in general and , specifically , in the peace process.
   
   Throughout the peace process , Moussa has reiterated the importance of the US role and its neutrality. He pressured the US into assuming a balanced and unbiased approach , without which he believed attainment of peace would be an arduous task. He was quoted in Al Ahram as saying , When there was relative balance between the US-Arab relations on one hand , and the US-Israeli ones on the other , the peace process was taking reasonable pace , and after the clear-cut US bias to Israel , the peace process came to halt..
   
   In his new role , Moussa will continue to pursue Arab objectives , pushing for the resumption of peace negotiations not only for the Palestinians , but also for Syria and Lebanon.
   
   Although Egypt's vision of Arab unity will be promoted by Moussa's charismatic presence in the Arab League , Egyptians regret losing their popular foreign minister. It is likely that they will find it hard to relate to his successor , Ahmed Maher , for some time , despite his impressive CV in the service.
