"We had no idea the backlash to 9/11 would be so big," said activist Devon Abdallah, a blonde, blue-eyed Lebanese-American staffing the Arab-American Community Coalition booth at yesterday's festival.
After 9/11, the coalition set up a 24-hour hot line to deal with the hate incidents, employment discrimination and unlawful detention of Arab Americans wrongly linked to terrorism.
"The primary fear now is not hate crimes, it is the government," said Abdallah, a community organizer for the American Civil Liberties Union in Washington state.
