When Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Abbuhl came upon a couple lying on the ground outside of last spring's Eddie Money concert, his first thought was to tell them they "need to take it elsewhere."
Abbuhl, who testified at the rape trial of Gregory Combs, 35, of Orion Township, on Thursday, quickly found out that this was no rock-and-roll inspired fantasy, he told the jury.
He had seen the couple and positioned his car so the headlights shone on them in the darkened and unused southern entrance to the DTE Music Theatre in Independence Township.
"When she looked up at me, I could tell something wasn't right," the deputy said. Instead of telling them to take it elsewhere, he immediately asked if they knew one another.
"That's when she shoved him off of her and said, 'He was raping me,' " Abbuhl said. "She was very terrified, crying, 'Oh, my God; oh, my God, he raped me.' "
Abbuhl, a 7-year police veteran, was the key witness during the second day of testimony in the trial of Combs, who faces up to life in prison if convicted of the two counts of first-degree criminal sexual assault.
...
His statements would mean that the victim, now a 20-year-old Clarkston woman; her two friends, who told of her being upset and battered; two sheriff's detectives, who told of the interviews with Combs and victim; and Abbuhl all lied about what happened.
...
Abbuhl told the jury the woman immediately ran from Combs and stood behind the deputy, using the officer to shield herself from her alleged attacker.
...
Abbuhl said she was hysterical, crying and pacing. There was blood on her face, which she said came when he punched her in the nose.
Throughout the testimony, the victim was huddled by her parents, with her father keeping an arm around her and her mother leaning into her. -
