   Marie Abbott from Canada Marie Abbott, aged 15 from Yukon Territory, Canada Marie joined the Plan Canada Youth Advisory Council in 2005 and co-ordinates communication between Canadian youth and youth living in developing countries.
   
   As a member of the council, Marie travelled to Oslo, Norway, to participate in the Youth Participation - Action with a Cause workshop organised by Plan.
   
   Marie has also collected over 800 handprints with messages of hope for children in Africa whose lives are affected by HIV and AIDS. These will be displayed at the AIDS conference in Toronto.
   
   Marie has given over 60 presentations, speaking to more than 1,500 people about various issues including HIV and AIDS, child labour, hunger and education.

   At the age of 12, Marie Abbott became appalled when she learned about the horrific plight of child soldiers.
   
   Her interest soon developed into a passion for raising awareness and taking action on children's rights issues.
   
   Marie coordinated activities to raise $6,000 to build a school in war torn Sierra Leone and $3,000 to support a children's centre in Tanzania.
   
   Marie is involved in Free the Children and Amnesty International and is a member of the Foster Parents Plan Youth Advisory Council.
   
   Now 16, she has traveled to Norway, Italy, Mexico and Brazil to learn more about international development and to Tanzania as a grand prize winner of CIDA's butterfly 208 contest.

   Achievements: Marie was named one of Youth in Motion's Top 20 Under 20 that recognizes young Canadians who have made significant achievements and demonstrated leadership. Experience: Marie has given presentations to over 60 audiences, speaking to 1500 people. She also works to create political change and coordinates fundraising campaigns to support grassroots initiatives in developing countries. She has attended many international and national youth conferences and has traveled to developing countries to learn about issues first hand.
