Our speaker was Mack Abbott of Gainesville. Mr. Abbott is president of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association. Before the meeting started he raised the flag by the hangar. (Thanks for the flag Dick) Then we all said the Pledge of Allegiance. I bet I wasn't the only one with a tear in my eye. Mr. Abbott had seen the Arizona blow up and here he was raising a flag that had flown over the Arizona. He was both the first person at Pearl Harbor to shoot at the Japanese and the last person in W.W.II to shoot at the Japanese. He was very personable and gave a great presentation. He fought on Guadalcanal for 18 months, later he fought on Saipan, Tinian and many other places. He was very interesting and most of us wished he could have talked longer. When Paul Tibbets came back from dropping the bomb on Hiroshima, Mr. Abbott was there when he gave his report to General Spaatz.

Mr. Abbott had been planning to take his first flying lesson on the morning of December 7th, 1941 when he was rudely interrupted by the Japanese.
    ...
I introduced them and John took him on a tour of his plane and Mack had never seen a plane like that up close.
    ...
John graciously answered all his questions and then loaded Mr. Abbott and his girlfriend on board.
    ...
Mr. Abbott called back a few days later and told me how pleased he was with everyone in the chapter. He said we were friendly and made him feel right at home. I had taken pictures of him in and by John's plane and he had them developed the next day. Mr. Abbott is writing a book that will be published in early November. It is called the "First and Last Shot". His co-author called me and said that Mack was so impressed with us that he is re-writing part of the last chapter to include us. (We will need volunteers to read this too. How 'bout dat? We is gonna be in a book.) Last night he called me again and thanked me for our hospitality and I kept telling him how pleased we were with him.
