"In terms of number of people served, we're one of the largest, one of the most diverse," said Lynn Abbott, CAU associate director.
It wasn't always that way, though. It began in 1968 with a two-week series of multidisciplinary courses and did not become self-sustaining until the mid-1980s. However, a patient administration took the long view, understanding that it would become, in time, a valuable asset, Abbott said.

Faculty members were also a bit hesitant about working with fully independent adults, rather than 18-year-old freshmen. In time, many of the teachers grew to love working with adult students, but "first you've got to make that sale," she said.
