Gary E. Abbott
Senior Analyst - Enterprise Software gabbott@hcwainwright.com
As a senior analyst at H.C. Wainwright with research responsibility for covering Internet infrastructure, enterprise software, and IT services companies, Gary Abbott is often quoted in trade press and other media. His expertise comes from his association with numerous industry executives over the past several years and from his former position as managing director and director of equity research at Punk, Ziegel & Company, a New York-based investment bank.
During the past 10 years, corporations have been making investments to automate the operations of their human resources, finance, manufacturing, shipping, sales, marketing and customer service departments. Abbott believes these investments have tangled up companies' IT infrastructures and will likely drive many years of infrastructure software investments. In his industry coverage, he groups the stocks into three categories based on the infrastructure investments needed: (1) the systems-level technologies that deliver application reliability, availability and scalability; (2) the development and deployment technologies; and (3) the application and business process integration technologies.
Although most of the software stocks Abbott covers are currently priced comfortably within the normal range of 4 to 6 times sales, he feels that "the likelihood of enterprise software being an industry of above-average growth in 2002 is high, which suggests that further price-to-sales multiple expansion might occur to discount the accelerating top-line growth that is expected."
Abbott expects early signs to begin to show up in the first quarter. However, he also notes "the easy money has been made playing the bounce off of the lows and the next leg up will follow the choice names that actually turn upward with the environment." His "top picks" now include Embarcadero Technologies (EMBT), Epiphany (EPNY), Internet Security Systems (ISSX) Oracle (ORCL), Serena (SRNA), and Tibco (TIBX), noting that "they have the most room for share price appreciation driven by an upswing in revenue and earnings momentum that should be sustained throughout 2002." He adds, "These companies also map relatively well to the areas of IT spending intentions for 2002, which includes database and development, Internet security, integration and storage management."
Internet Security Systems, in particular, was recently upgraded by Abbott to a strong buy with an increased target price of $61 per share. The company, a leading provider of network security software, reported better-than-expected earnings and sales in mid-January. As a result, Abbott now believes the company is positioned to show accelerating revenue growth and margin expansion for the next few quarters.
Another strong buy-rated stock from Abbott is Serena Software, Inc. (SRNA), a company that makes software change management and developer productivity tools. "Given the strong mainframe trends and the increasing opportunities for distributed client/server and Internet product sales, we remain extremely bullish on Serena", he says., -
