    Deborah A. Abbott, Ph.D., is a Professor of Counseling at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio (CCC).She is past president of the African-American Genealogical Society, Cleveland, Ohio (AAGS) where she is now a member of both the Travel and Education Committees.She has previously taught genealogy classes for the Shaker Heights, Ohio Adult Recreation Department and the Continuing Education Division of CCC.She teaches new members of AAGS and others the basic skills needed to conduct genealogical research.For those individuals who are more advanced, she teaches the tools needed to hurdle brickwalls.

    Dr. Abbott has attended many local, state, regional and national genealogical conferences.For the past two years, she has been a student at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy in Salt Lake City, Utah where she spent an intensive week focusing on "Southern Research" and "Writing Your Family History."

    Dr. Abbott has presented a variety of genealogy topics to local genealogical societies, schools, churches, etc.Her experience and techniques are based on her own family research where she has been able to document and identify three of her family's slave holders.

    In addition to Dr. Abbott's membership in AAGS, she is also a member of the National Genealogical Society, the Western Reserve Historical Society, the Caswell County (N.C.) History Association, the Utah Genealogical Association and the Genealogical Speakers Guild.

    She has been researching since 1990 in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Ohio.

    At the June 24, 2006 members meeting, Dr. Deborah Abbott outlined the importance of researching collateral lines (descendants from the same ancestor but not a direct line).

    She recommended leaving no stone unturned - research siblings, half-siblings, aunts, uncles, in-laws, "outlaws" (ex in-laws), and others.
