   Bruce Abbott is a professional teacher, composer, and musician.He is the former Director of Instrumental Ensembles at Salve Regina College in Newport, RI, and instructor of saxophone at URI, where he also earned his Master of Music degree in saxophone performance.He has performed in concert series and jazz clubs throughout the United States, including the Newport Jazz Festival, and has toured with the Artie Shaw Orchestra under the direction of Dick Johnson.Bruce's most recent recordings are Just The Way You Look Tonight, with the North Star Jazz Ensemble, and Homeward Bound with Common Ground, both on North Star Records.

   Review: With Romancing the Sax: Sweet Saxophone and Lush Strings, the newest North Star Records release by Bruce Abbott and the North Star Jazz Ensemble, the listener gets exactly as advertised.The CD consists of very mainstream interpretations of eleven well known and often-performed selections from the Great American Song Book.
   
   Accompanying Abbott is a standard rhythm section of Ron Fournier piano, Paul Mason drums, and Marty Ballou on acoustic bass.
   ...
   The tracks on the recording follow a very similar (and familiar) format with Abbott playing the heads of the tunes and the strings sometimes picking up the melody at the bridge.Pianist Fournier also provides complimentary fill work around Abbott's playing and his occasional solos are also nicely played.
   
   The sound Abbott renders from his tenor saxophone could very easily be typified as having a romantic quality to it.
