Marmion Abbey and Academy were named in honor of Abbot Columba Marmion OSB (1858-1923) who was renowned for his heroic virtue, sanctity of life and spiritual writings. Marmion originated in 1933 from the St. Meinrad Abbey in Indiana as a Priory to conduct the former Fox Valley Catholic High School for Boys on Lake Street in Aurora with fifteen Benedictine monks. Schroeder first came to Marmion in the fall of 1959, after having served in the U.S. Army in Japan and the Korean War (where he won a Silver Star for bravery in battle), Germany and Fort Riley, Kansas. He served as the Senior Army Instructor and Sergeant Major in charge of military property. In 1967 he retired from active duty, but he continued his duties at Marmion. He headed the Rifle Team (now called the Schroeder Snipers) and the Drill Team and started the Adventure Platoon. He was a reliable and generous bus driver for several decades and for many years lined the football field during the week and sold tickets on Saturday. His position as ticket-seller at Marmion basketball and football games over the year has been a campus fixture. He was honored by the Alumni Association in 1995 with the Centurion Award and was made an honorary alumnus. Schroeder continues to serve the Academy as the main assistant in the Decio Library.

This year's donation will be used in similar fashion as 2004 with the funds going to the Student Financial Assistance Program, helping needy and deserving young men attend Marmion. In 2004, ten students received Financial Aid grants of $2,420 each from the Wiseman-Hughes donation. The funds contribute to Marmion's financial aid grant goals, which exceed $200,000 annually.
