   Halle Morrison of Naperville joins the Science Department as an instructor in Chemistry, Geology and Geography. She worked as a geologist for Environmental Science Associates in San Francisco, CA and taught Chemistry at the Benedictine Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley CA. Halle earned a Bachelor's Degree in Geology from the College of Wooster and a Master's Degree from San Jose State University. She is also faculty moderator of the Chemistry Club.

   Marmion Abbey and Academy were named in honor of Abbot Columba Marmion OSB (1858-1923) who was renowned for his heroic virtue, sanctity of life and spiritual writings. Marmion originated in 1933 from the St. Meinrad Abbey in Indiana as a Priory to conduct the former Fox Valley Catholic High School for Boys on Lake Street in Aurora with fifteen Benedictine monks. Marmion Abbey currently consists of 47 members (33 priests and 14 brothers), three are Pastors of Aurora parishes and nine are members of the San José Priory and Seminary in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, Central America.    On February 14, Marmion hosted its annual Invitational Math Contest. Participating in the contest were Marmion, Rosary, Driscoll, St. Francis, and Montini. Marmion's geometry team (Tom Hymel of Batavia, David Iozzo of Batavia, Graeme Quinn of Aurora, Bill Simon of LaGrange, Matt McHugh of Batavia, and Andrew Canning of St. Charles) earned a first place finish.

   Schroeder first came to Marmion in the fall of 1959, after having served in the U.S. Army in Japan and the Korean War (where he won a Silver Star for bravery in battle), Germany and Fort Riley, Kansas. He served as the Senior Army Instructor and Sergeant Major in charge of military property. In 1967 he retired from active duty, but he continued his duties at Marmion. He headed the Rifle Team (now called the Schroeder Snipers) and the Drill Team and started the Adventure Platoon. He was a reliable and generous bus driver for several decades and for many years lined the football field during the week and sold tickets on Saturday. His position as ticket-seller at Marmion basketball and football games over the year has been a campus fixture. He was honored by the Alumni Association in 1995 with the Centurion Award and was made an honorary alumnus. Schroeder continues to serve the Academy as the main assistant in the Decio Library.
   
   "For his over forty-five years of service to Marmion and for the lasting impact he has had on so many students and faculty with his practical wisdom and example of fidelity, the Marmion family is privileged and pleased to honor him with this award," said Rev. Joel Rippinger OSB, Marmion's Faculty/Staff Chaplain.
   
   The Fr. Alcuin Deck OSB Distinguished Service Award is presented to an Academy faculty or staff member each quarter during the school year in recognition of outstanding contributions and faithful service to Marmion Academy and in gratitude for exemplifying a spirit of charity and dedication.    This year's donation will be used in similar fashion as 2004 with the funds going to the Student Financial Assistance Program, helping needy and deserving young men attend Marmion. In 2004, ten students received Financial Aid grants of $2,420 each from the Wiseman-Hughes donation. The funds contribute to Marmion's financial aid grant goals, which exceed $200,000 annually.
   
   "We're grateful to Jim and his company for their contributions to Marmion," said Father Charles Reichenbacher, OSB, Marmion's director of development, at the Wednesday, Oct. 26 school assembly.
