"Developers, utility companies and other land users need to be aware of these changes," says Jon Abbatt, ADAS development sector manager."No longer will it prove an adequate defence to suggest that damage to any European protected species or their habitat was accidental, or due to lack of knowledge of the existence of a species on a specific site."

He stresses the increased importance of obtaining a thorough environmental survey prior to work commencing."Given the growing list of plants and animals now classified as protected, no area can be designated as ‘safe' without a detailed survey," he suggests.

Jon Abbatt, ADAS' environmental manager leading this offer, said, 'Extensive market research had shown that our clients were looking for a service provider prepared to share the risk associated with delivering the right environmental solution.

Jon adds, 'While surveys and impact assessments highlight the risks developers face, it is not always clear what the real result is or how the risks will impact on the bottom line. For example, housebuilders can experience critical delays if Long-eared Bats are discovered and they may have to make costly modifications to their plans. The detection of Great Crested Newts on a building site could cost a developer in the region of £80,000 to resolve.

'However, delays and additional costs could be avoided if developers, architects and planners work with ADAS to ensure risks are identified and dealt with from the outset of the development.'

Jon and his team are currently focusing on providing developers with solutions relating to protected species management, habitat creation and the delivery of sensitive environmental projects.

He concludes, 'Our primary aim is to save time and money for our clients by identifying and resolving a wide range of environmental issues enabling our client to focus on their core building and engineering work.
