Dr Z G Abbas
Dr. Zulfiqarali G. Abbas is a consultant physician at Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he plays a key role in running the diabetes service, currently the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. He is specialized in internal medicine, diabetes and endocrinology. Dr. Abbas is also consultant physician at Abbas Medical Centre, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Dr. Abbas received his basic medical degree from the University of Karachi, Pakistan, and completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine in the United Kingdom and Tanzania. He obtained his Masters of Medicine (MMed) in 1995.
Dr. Abbas has published and presented several scientific papers in the field of diabetic foot disease in Africa, and is involved in several ongoing research projects in the field of diabetic limbs. He was responsible for setting up the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary diabetic foot service in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is also responsible for instituting the largest surveillance system for diabetic foot and hand complications in Africa.
Dr Abbas is vice president of the Eastern Region of the Pan-African Diabetes Study Group, a founding member of the International Diabetic Foot Study Group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), member of the International Diabetes Federation Consultative Section on the Diabetic Foot, member of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot and representative of the task force on implementation of consensus on the diabetic foot in East Africa. He is also chairman of the Step-by-Step Foot Project in Tanzania: improving diabetes foot care in the developing world. The project, supported by the World Diabetes Foundation, aims at reducing the risk of lower limb amputation in the patient population.
Dr. Abbas was awarded an international fellowship in applied epidemiology by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, USA (2002). He currently sits on the editorial boards of several international journals.
