    Yousuf`s ICL move `big loss`: Zaheer Abbas

KARACHI: Star batsman Mohammad Yousuf`s move to the Indian Cricket League is a huge loss to Pakistan cricket, former national skipper Zaheer Abbas said on Thursday while another great criticised his decision.

Yousuf, 34, joined the lucrative ICL on Wednesday, prompting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to ban him from national and international cricket.

"Under the scenario when Pakistan`s batting strength is already weak, Yousuf`s move to the ICL is a big loss," said Abbas, himself a batting legend in 1970s and 80s.

"Although it`s a great loss to the country, you can`t stop anyone from playing privately. Banning Yousuf is not the right step," said Abbas.

Legendary veteran batsman Zaheer Abbas said that a former cricketer should be appointed as the new Board chief."It would be great if a former cricketer is appointed as the PCB chairman.I believe that somebody who has played cricket at the highest level can run the sport better than anybody else," The News quoted him as saying.

Zaheer further said that sometimes players had to be dealt with an iron hand."I'm telling you with personal experience that you need a person with ample experience to maintain discipline among the players," he said.

Lahore, Sept 30 : International cricket matches should not be organized during late night hours in Pakistan under the prevailing security situation in the country, former Pakistan cricket captain Zaheer Abbas has said.

Zaheer made this suggestion at a meeting of the federal sports ministry held last weekend to discuss cricket affairs."Well, my views are simple and I have told the meeting that night cricket these days is not advisable because of the security problem," the Daily Times quoted Zaheer as saying in an interview with a cricket website.

He added: "My viewpoint is that in the prevailing circumstances God forbid something happens in these night matches it will lead to a lot of chaos, which would be bad for Pakistan cricket as teams are already not willing to come here."

Zaheer pointed out that one needed to be cautious in these times and cricket grounds where night matches were being played were not secure and safe."I just worry that we don't give the other teams more excuses for not coming to Pakistan. If something happens it will be very difficult for the PCB to convince teams to come," he said.

Zaheer also said he did not see the Australians remaining in India if any more bomb blasts took place there."The security that has been provided to the Australians now they appear satisfied with it.But actually they (Australians) are very much concerned about the blast in Delhi and I think if such an incident is repeated they will leave the place," he said.

No technique required to bat in T20: Zaheer Abbas
    ...
Karachi, April 26: The purists may scoff at it but former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas feels the Indian Premier League is here to stay as the cash-rich twenty20 extravaganza has caught the imagination of the masses like no other cricket tournament before it.

"Looking at the way the people are taking to twenty20 cricket I am sure it has a bright future and is here to stay," Zaheer Abbas said on Saturday.

He said the growing number of spectators in IPL matches was a big boost for cricket itself which could now be promoted globally.

"After the success of Indian cricket League and now the IPL, I think even those players and purists who don't like this form of the game and think it will harm traditional cricket have been forced to take to it and support it.They have no other option," he said.

Zaheer, however, felt batsmen would gain nothing from twenty20 cricket.

"There is no technique required in this form only that player is successful who can lash out big sixes and fours.I pity the bowlers. The best of them are mauled and I sympathise with them because in four overs they don't even find their rhythm properly," he explained.

"Even the skills of the best bowlers are wasted in this form of the game.I think any bowler who can take three wickets in twenty20 cricket has achieved something big because when the batsmen are willing to take risks even the best bowlers are helpless," Zaheer said.

Zaheer said administrators needed to seriously assess the popularity of twenty20 cricket because of its short duration.
