    The state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Muktar Abbas, who was away when the incident occurred, Nigerian Tribune learnt was rushing back to Minna from Abuja along with the AIG in charge of the zone as at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

    A large number of students staged a demonstration to the Government House chanting war songs and condemning the shooting by the police of their colleagues.The students, carrying playcards, some of which read "How many of us student will police kill", "Enough of killing of students", threatened fire-for-fire if any student was killed again by the police.

    A spokesman of the students Onoja Akor also asked the police to release their colleagues being detained at the Bosso Police Station.

    Meanwhile, while the swearing in was going on in Abuja, words got to the executives of NANS that the police had killed students and wounded several others who were coming to witness the inauguration.

    Parading the corpses of the men to newsmen at the Command's headquarters, Yandoka, Bauchi, the State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Mukhtar Abbas, said the robbers met their waterloo during a gun battle with the security operatives along Kano - Jigawa / Azare Road.The suspected armed robbers, according to the Police Commissioner, belonged to a gang of about 20 armed bandits, who have been terrorising motorists in Bauchi and the neighbouring Kano and Jigawa States.Many, he said, had fallen victim of the robbers and either lost properties, their lives or both in such encounters. The security patrol team, according to him, trailed the gang to their hide out, following a tip off and a shoot out between the team and the gang ensued. "The exchange of fire led to the shooting of four members of the gang", the commissioner explained, stating that the suspected robbers, who received major injuries, later died.Abbas also displayed items allegedly recovered from the suspects, and they included three pistols, one double barrel gun ,about 70 bullets, a military camouflage and a police cap.Abbas said preliminary investigation had shown that the suspects did not have any military or police background, but two of their members were awaiting trial in a neighbouring state. He said the State Command would return two of gang members captured alive to Bauchi to answer questions on their alleged involvement in crimes committed in the State, charging that the responsibility of ensuring security of life and property must be a collective effort. "I appeal to our people to always give information on people of questionable character in their midst to the police.", he said.

    Displaying the corpses of the suspected armed robbers before newsmen and other residents at the State Police Command Headquarters, Bauchi Thursday, last week , the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mukhtar Abbas, said the gang of six armed robbery suspects were shot dead in a shoot-out at Alkaleri in the early hours of the day.

    The Police Commissioner also said three more suspected robbers were shot dead at Ganjuwa on the same day while others were still at large.

    Briefing newsmen further in his office, Abbas said another gang of thieves numbering five, who specialized in stealing cows were arrested with a Nissan bus and a bull, which they used to operate and transport to other parts of the country.

    He restated the commitment of the State Police Command towards making the State crime-free.

    Abbas thanked the State Government for its assistance to the security operatives i the effort to fight crime in the State.He called on the general public to continue to cooperate with his men and officers in the discharge of their statutory functions in the state.

    Displaying the corpses of eight of the suspected armed robbers before the newsmen and other residents at the state Police Command Headquarters, the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mukhtar Abbas, vowed that his command would make the state uninhabitable for criminals, saying that the police has not only intensified war against armed robbers in the state but also alert to their responsibility of ensuring the protection of lives and property of the citizenry.

    According to him, "the state police command has between last Saturday and Monday shot dead nine suspected armed robbers who have been terrorising motorists and members of the public along Bauchi-Ningi and Kano-Azare roads."

    Abbas said five suspected robbers were shot dead during a shoot-out with some security operatives on last week with their dead bodies brought to the command, adding that the police which acted on a tip-off "missed three of them who escaped with one of them suspected to have ran away with the day's loot."

    The police commisioner also stressed that the joint police/local hunters operation succeeded in arresting four of the suspects along Kano-Azare-Bauchi road after pursuing the criminals up to Kano and some handsets recovered from them.

    He disclosed that there were about 14 different armed robbery gangs with 150 membership and were led by a Nigerian whom he gave his name as Mohammed Mahe, operating in the state and are all connected as confirmed by their assault last weekend.

    Abbas said the feat was recorded beccause of useful information made available to the police and urged memebrs of the public to assist the police more, as according to him, the identities of all police informants would remain confidential.

    The state Police Commissioner, Alhaji Mukhtar Abbas, who disclosed this yesterday while receiving the Gwallaga Community executives committee during a courtesy call in his office, warned the "armed robbers and other criminals still taking refuge in the state to leave the state immediately in their own interest or face the wrath of the command."

    Abbas said since his assumption, the rate of crimes had reduced to the barest minimum, adding that efforts were being intensified towards curtailing the nefarious activities of men of the underworld in the state.

    The commissioner, who declared that his men would not relent on their efforts to make the state crime-free, disclosed that the command has evolved security strategies aimed at ensuring the protection of lives and property of the citizenry.

    He however blamed parents and guardians for their lukewarm attitude towards their children, which according to him, often led to youth involvement in vices such as crimes and cultism.

    The police boss called on the public to always assist the police with useful information on the hideouts of criminals with a view to apprehending them as well as ensuring peace and order in the state.

    Abbas, who expressed appreciation for the visit, promised to protect lives and property of the entire people of the state.
