Parading the corpses of the men to newsmen at the Command's headquarters, Yandoka, Bauchi, the State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Mukhtar Abbas, said the robbers met their waterloo during a gun battle with the security operatives along Kano - Jigawa / Azare Road. The suspected armed robbers, according to the Police Commissioner, belonged to a gang of about 20 armed bandits, who have been terrorising motorists in Bauchi and the neighbouring Kano and Jigawa States. Many, he said, had fallen victim of the robbers and either lost properties, their lives or both in such encounters. The security patrol team, according to him, trailed the gang to their hide out, following a tip off and a shoot out between the team and the gang ensued. "The exchange of fire led to the shooting of four members of the gang", the commissioner explained, stating that the suspected robbers, who received major injuries, later died.Abbas also displayed items allegedly recovered from the suspects, and they included three pistols, one double barrel gun ,about 70 bullets, a military camouflage and a police cap.Abbas said preliminary investigation had shown that the suspects did not have any military or police background, but two of their members were awaiting trial in a neighbouring state. He said the State Command would return two of gang members captured alive to Bauchi to answer questions on their alleged involvement in crimes committed in the State, charging that the responsibility of ensuring security of life and property must be a collective effort. "I appeal to our people to always give information on people of questionable character in their midst to the police.", he said.
